Jim Stewart was named an associate vice president for capital planning and facilities in July 2022, after having served as assistant vice president for capital planning and facilities since July 2017, and interim executive director of capital projects since December 2016.
Stewart manages the Capital Projects unit, which provides construction, renovation, and design services for all IU campuses. This unit includes Architecture Team Leads, Interior Design, Construction Management, Engineering Services, Quality Assurance and Safety, and Small Projects/Internal Design.
Stewart also spent two years as director of space planning and utilization at the IU School of Medicine, where he maintained oversight of eight regional centers for medical education and approximately 3 million square feet of facilities and property.
Prior to his employment at IU, Stewart served 27 years in the United States Navy. He was initially trained as a pilot and spent 22 years as a naval aviator. Stewart also held titles as senior executive/chief staff officer in Okinawa, Japan, and Navy Pentagon strategist in Washington, D.C. When he retired in 2014, Stewart was the commanding officer of naval support activity at Crane, the third-largest U.S. Navy installation.
