April 22, 2025 marked the annual Sustainability Symposium, celebrating the achievements of the IU students, staff and faculty who have dedicated themselves to advancing sustainability on campus and in communities across the state. Coinciding with Earth Day this year, the event brought together Sustainability Scholars, sustainability interns, McKinney Climate Fellows, and sustainability researchers to highlight the accomplishments in their work during the past year.
Remarks were given by Vice President of Capital Planning and Facilites Tom Morrison, Managing Director of the Enviromental Resilience Institute (ERI) Sarah Mincey, Director of the Integrated Program in the Environment (IPE) Sarah Osterhoudt, and Chief Sustainability Officer Jessica Davis, highlighting student contributions to campus, state, and global climate solutions. A keynote address was delivered by Eduardo Brondizio, professor of Anthropology and recent winner of the Tyler Prize, bringing to focus the noteworthy history of Earth Day at IU and the lessons that can be drawn today from that inaugural celebration in 1970. Student speaker Mia Terek, current Waste Management Intern with IU Sustainability, spoke about the impact she was able to have as a former McKinney Climate Fellow and as a sustainability intern, and the impact that those programs had on her college experience and professional development.
