Introduction
Follow these procedures for locating underground utilities prior to any underground excavation work including utility repair, geotechnical investigations, landscaping, post hole digging, installation of signs, and tent placement, surveys and design work.
A. Bloomington Campus
1. Contact the Utility Information Supervisor at 812-855-3740 for an Underground Construction Permit. Please allow three days for all utilities to be located and verified. As soon as your request is received, IU will verify the location of all IU underground utilities including: steam, water, chilled; water, electricity, gas, EMS, telephone, and sewers.
A permit will be issued for the work and delivered to the contractor requesting the utilities location. Underground construction activity will be stopped if a permit has not been issued, or the permit has expired (good for seven days from the date issued).
2. Contact Indiana Underground Plant Protection Service (IUPPS); dial 811 or 1-800-382-5544 to locate all utilities owned by Duke Energy, Vectren, City of Bloomington Utilities (water and sewer), Comcast, Smithville, and AT&T. Please allow three days for the utilities to be verified.
Note: There is no fee for the utility locating service either through IU or IUPPS. However, if any of the utility systems mentioned above are damaged and an underground construction permit has not been issued, or is not current, the cost of the utility system repair will be the responsibility of the contractor performing the underground construction.
3. Mark the perimeter of the proposed underground work by white-lining the area requested so the utility personnel will know exactly where the work will be located. Your staff will be able to assist with this work since they will have knowledge of the exact location of the work. If the work is moved, or additional work is anticipated, please request a remark of the location.
B. IUPUI Campus
Contact Indiana Underground Plant Protection Service (IUPPS) at 811 or 1-800-382-5544 to locate all public and private utilities on the IUPUI campus. Please allow three days for all utilities to be located.
C. Regional Campuses
Discuss project with Regional Campus Facility Operations for their guidance and procedures at that campus. Procedures will vary depending upon project requirements and work to be done.
Additional Information
Uniform color codes (APWA) will be used to mark utilities:
RED—electric ductbanks and cables, lighting cable
YELLOW—natural gas, oil, gasoline, steam and condensate piping
ORANGE—telephone, cable TV, fiber optic, underground cables, and duct banks
BLUE—water, irrigation and chilled water piping
GREEN—sanitary and storm sewer piping
WHITE—proposed construction
PINK—temporary survey markings
